Ice is a major roadway hazard during winter months. Major cities battle this road condition using salt pellets. Salt brine is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly pre-wetting agent used along with this deicing process. Salt raises the freezing point of water making it an ideal preventative and deicing agent. Salt brine is used to pre-wet rock salt inside the salting trucks. This prevents the salt from bouncing off the roadway and activates the salt immediately. This allows for less wasted salt and environmental damage. Salt brine is also used as a preventative and is sprayed onto roadways before winter storms hit. This process uses less salt and makes it much harder for ice and snow to adhere to the pavement. Excessive salting on roadways can cause metal corrosion to vehicles and be poisonous to the surrounding natural environment.
